{"id":8929,"date":"2017-12-08T08:43:43","date_gmt":"2017-12-08T13:43:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/?p=8929"},"modified":"2017-12-08T08:43:43","modified_gmt":"2017-12-08T13:43:43","slug":"reza-zarrab-recounts-death-threat-to-iran-sanctions-jury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/8929\/","title":{"rendered":"Reza Zarrab Recounts Death Threat to #Iran Sanctions Jury"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-1\">\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"306\" data-total-count=\"306\"><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">The New York Times,<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\"> Dec. 7,2017<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #666699;\">:<\/span><\/strong> Reza Zarrab, the chief government witness in a trial involving a billion-dollar scheme to smuggle gold for oil in violation of United States sanctions on Iran, testified on Thursday that his life had been threatened in a federal detention center in Brooklyn after he began cooperating with the prosecution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"107\" data-total-count=\"413\">A fellow inmate, saying he had been given instructions to kill him, pulled a knife on him, Mr. Zarrab said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"52\" data-total-count=\"465\">\u201cI was about to lose my life,\u201d he told the jury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"106\" data-total-count=\"571\">\u201cHe said that he had heard that I was cooperating \u2014 that\u2019s why he was doing it,\u201d Mr. Zarrab added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"129\" data-total-count=\"700\">As a result of the threat, he was removed from the Brooklyn jail and placed in the F.B.I.\u2019s custody at an undisclosed location.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-1\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"123\" data-total-count=\"823\">Mr. Zarrab, 34, told the jury that had he not chosen to cooperate, it is possible that he would never have been threatened.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"story-continues-2\" class=\"story-interrupter\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-2\">\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"87\" data-total-count=\"910\">\u201cBut did you choose to be a witness anyway?\u201d a prosecutor, Sidhardha Kamaraju said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"59\" data-total-count=\"969\">\u201cI\u2019m here now,\u201d Mr. Zarrab responded. \u201cYes, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"209\" data-total-count=\"1178\">The testimony in Federal District Court in Manhattan came on Mr. Zarrab\u2019s seventh and final day on the witness stand in the trial of a Turkish banker, Mehmet Hakan Atilla, who was also charged in the scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"308\" data-total-count=\"1486\">Mr. Zarrab\u2019s wide-ranging account suggested that a high-level Turkish official \u2014 who was not named but from the testimony and trial exhibits appears to be Recep Tayyip Erdogan, now Turkey\u2019s president \u2014 had more extensive knowledge of the sanctions-busting activity than had been disclosed previously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"252\" data-total-count=\"1738\">Last week, Mr. Zarrab testified that he had been told that Mr. Erdogan gave orders in 2012, when he was prime minister, that two Turkish banks be allowed to participate in the scheme, which Mr. Zarrab, a Turkish-Iranian gold trader, helped orchestrate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"63\" data-total-count=\"1801\">Mr. Erdogan has repeatedly denounced the case as a fabrication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"272\" data-total-count=\"2073\">Mr. Zarrab, responding to the prosecutor\u2019s questions, also described the toll his cooperation had taken. He noted that while he was testifying for the government last week, prosecutors back in Turkey ordered the seizure of his assets and those of nearly 20 other people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"100\" data-total-count=\"2173\">Turkish officials cited a part of the Turkish penal code that concerns the leaking of state secrets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"160\" data-total-count=\"2333\">\u201cWhat I\u2019m doing here is being assessed as espionage,\u201d Mr. Zarrab said, \u201cand it is as if I had obtained all these assets based on my cooperation here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"220\" data-total-count=\"2553\">In an unrelated legal action, on Wednesday Mr. Zarrab was sued by an inmate who claims Mr. Zarrab sexually assaulted him when the men shared a cell in a different jail, the Metropolitan Correctional Center, in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"135\" data-total-count=\"2688\">The inmate\u2019s lawsuit said the abuse, which included rape, occurred between November 2016 and March 2017, when the men were cellmates.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"152\" data-total-count=\"2840\">Robert J. Anello, a lawyer for Mr. Zarrab, said on Thursday, \u201cThe allegations are outrageous and false from a source that is not remotely credible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"253\" data-total-count=\"3093\">The inmate\u2019s lawyer, Alexei Schacht, said an inquiry by the jail had found the complaint to be unsubstantiated. That meant, he said, only that officials there had concluded there was insufficient evidence to establish whether the assault had occurred.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"66\" data-total-count=\"3159\">A spokesman for the jail did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"361\" data-total-count=\"3520\">The inmate, who is not being identified because he is an alleged sexual assault victim, claims in the suit that he and Mr. Zarrab became friends in the jail and that Mr. Zarrab offered to pay for him to retain a private lawyer.
