{"id":8379,"date":"2017-10-05T23:02:29","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T04:02:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/?p=8379"},"modified":"2017-10-05T23:02:29","modified_gmt":"2017-10-06T04:02:29","slug":"iranian-chess-player-to-compete-for-us-after-ban-for-not-wearing-hijab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/8379\/","title":{"rendered":"#Iranian chess player to compete for US after ban for not wearing hijab"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Dora Derakhshani was forbidden from playing for home country following matches in Gibraltar in January<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A leading Iranian chess player, barred from her country\u2019s team after refusing to wear a headscarf, will now compete for the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Dorsa Derakhshani, 19, who was born in Tehran, was forbidden from playing by the Iranian chess federation following the Gibraltar chess festival in January, said US <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/chess\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Chess<\/a>, the national governing body for competitions and player rankings. She did not wear a hijab during the event.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-2 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Derakhshani has since moved to the United States where she attends St Louis University and plays for the school\u2019s team. <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/new.uschess.org\/news\/dorsa-derakashani-now-plays-us-chess\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">She will now compete as an official United States chess player.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels good and &#8230; peaceful to play for a federation where I am welcomed and supported,\u201d the website quoted Derakhshani as saying.<\/p>\n<p>On a US radio broadcast last week, she said: \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to finally having a stable trainer and a team, and I really wish to become grandmaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Derakhshani, who holds the titles of International Master and Woman Grandmaster with the World Chess Federation, said she also hoped to become a dentist.<\/p>\n<p>A few weeks after the Gibraltar competition, the Iranian chess federation announced it was banning Derakhshani for not wearing a hijab. It also banned her brother, who had played an Israeli entrant in Gibraltar, US Chess said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-2 | 2\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Derakhshani said she had competed before without a headscarf and thought the ban was issued for other reasons.
