When asked by reporters what he meant, the president, a former reality TV host, said: \u201cYou\u2019ll find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element--thumbnail element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-2 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-analysis--item \">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__standfirst u-cf\">Despite pressure from UK and France, US president expected to declare Tehran in violation of agreement but Senate could yet block reimposition of sanctions<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Several media outlets on Friday confirmed what has been suspected in Washington and foreign capitals for some time: that Trump<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-plans-to-declare-that-iran-nuclear-deal-is-not-in-the-national-interest\/2017\/10\/05\/825c916e-a9e3-11e7-b3aa-c0e2e1d41e38_story.html?hpid=hp_hp-top-table-main_trumpiran-310pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&amp;utm_term=.d7afe57a16a4\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> will not certify<\/a> the 2015 international nuclear deal with Iran, on the grounds it does not serve US security interests.<\/p>\n<p>That would trigger a period of 60 days in which it would be up to a delicately balanced Congress whether to reimpose sanctions. A decision to do so could trigger a collapse of the deal and a return to a tense standoff in the Middle East over the Iranian nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Iranian regime supports terrorism and exports violence and chaos across the Middle East,\u201d Trump said at a White House meeting of US military leaders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThat is why we must put an end to Iran\u2019s continued aggression and nuclear ambitions,\u201d he added. \u201cYou will be hearing about <a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/iran\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Iran<\/a> very shortly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The statement was made as he sat alongside senior security officials, the most senior of whom have said repeatedly that Iran is abiding by the 2015 nuclear agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The defence secretary, James Mattis,<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2017\/oct\/03\/us-defense-secretary-breaks-with-trump-in-backing-iran-nuclear-deal\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> said this week that staying with the deal,<\/a> under which Iran accepted strict curbs on its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief, was in US national security interests.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, General Joseph Dunford, recently said that pulling out of the multilateral deal, which was signed by some of Washington\u2019s closest allies, would affect US credibility and could hinder the ability of the US to strike security agreements in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, and national security advisor, HR McMaster, are both thought to have also advised Trump not to withhold certification.
