{"id":5561,"date":"2016-09-21T22:45:20","date_gmt":"2016-09-22T03:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/?p=5561"},"modified":"2016-09-21T22:45:20","modified_gmt":"2016-09-22T03:45:20","slug":"video-former-us-ambassador-warns-congress-iran-simply-is-not-an-acceptable-partner-in-the-war-against-terror","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/5561\/","title":{"rendered":"[Video] Former US Ambassador Warns Congress: &#8216;Iran Simply Is Not an Acceptable Partner in the War Against Terror&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Lauretta Brown <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>(CNSNews.com) September 21, 2016 \u2013<\/strong> James Jeffrey, former U.S. ambassador to Turkey and Iraq, argued Wednesday that \u201cIran simply is not an acceptable partner in the war against terror\u201d in his testimony on Capitol Hill on the state of the fight against Islamic terrorism 15 years after 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran simply is not an acceptable partner in the war against terror despite a recent article published in the United States by the Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif to that end,\u201d Jeffrey said in reference to a recent New York Times editorial by Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in which Zarif argued that the international community should unite to combat extremist Sunni Wahhabism.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-5561-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mojahedin.org\/links\/other\/2016921_SpecilaClip_22423458.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mojahedin.org\/links\/other\/2016921_SpecilaClip_22423458.mp4\">https:\/\/www.mojahedin.org\/links\/other\/2016921_SpecilaClip_22423458.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Jeffrey is the Philip Solondz distinguished fellow at The Washington Institute, where he focuses on U.S. diplomatic and military strategy in the Middle East, with emphasis on Turkey, Iraq, and Iran. He was a former ambassador in Baghdad, Ankara and Tirana, Albania, and served as assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor in the George W. Bush administration with a special focus on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe theocratic Iranian regime\u2019s Islamic roots have much in common with Sunni Islamic extremism,\u201d Jeffrey argued. \u201cIt has relation with al Qaeda and Taliban elements and undercuts international order and sovereignty and thus provides a breeding ground for terror of all sorts, but in particular &#8211; and we saw this in Iraq particularly &#8211; regional states generally view Iran as a greater existential threat than Sunni Islamic terror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is thus a real danger that if the Sunni-Shia conflict now seen in Syria emerges regionwide, our Sunni partners could see violent Sunni Islamic movements not as threats but as allies against Iran,\u201d Jeffrey warned.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey also testified that \u201conly a few people in the Middle East really endorse this kind of extreme terrorist violence,\u201d but \u201ca much larger percent of the population, however, accept views of Islam that are orthodox, that are quite strong, that include sharia and basically challenge modernity in some ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to be sensitive,\u201d he emphasized, but added, \u201csensitivity can go too far. One of the things I\u2019m concerned about is we seem to avoid speaking publicly of this threat as an Islamic terrorist threat. It is an Islamic terrorist threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we try to hide this, people in the region, Muslims know what\u2019s behind this.
