{"id":19387,"date":"2021-04-27T17:55:33","date_gmt":"2021-04-27T22:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/?p=19387"},"modified":"2021-04-27T17:55:33","modified_gmt":"2021-04-27T22:55:33","slug":"the-hill-lawmakers-tout-bipartisan-support-for-resolution-criticizing-irans-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/19387\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hill: Lawmakers tout bipartisan support for resolution criticizing Iran&#8217;s government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/sites\/all\/themes\/thehill\/images\/redesign\/thehill-logo-big.png\" alt=\"TheHill.com\" \/><\/p>\n<p>BY\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/author\/john-bowden\">JOHN BOWDEN<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0<span class=\"submitted-date\">04\/27\/21 12:11 PM EDT<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bipartisan support is growing on Capitol Hill for a Republican-led resolution condemning Iran\u2019s alleged human rights violations and sponsorship of militant groups in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers\u00a0on Tuesday sent a letter to\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/joe-biden\" data-nid=\"188332\">President Biden<\/a><\/span>, noting that support for the bill was expected to \u201csteadily increase\u201d in the House, while telling the president that lawmakers were \u201cencouraged to know that you are standing up for democracy and human rights around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They added in the letter that they hoped Biden would make three \u201cpillars\u201d central to his Iran policy going forward: \u201cdemocracy, human rights, and holding human rights abusers accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a press event Tuesday, lawmakers from both parties touted the resolution, which would express the U.S.\u2019s \u201csupport for the Iranian people\u2019s desire for a democratic, secular, and nonnuclear Republic of Iran\u201d while also \u201ccondemning violations of human rights and state-sponsored terrorism by the Iranian Government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very pleased to announce today that over 220 members, Republicans and Democrats alike, have co-sponsored the resolution,\u201d Rep.\u00a0<span class=\"rollover-people\" data-behavior=\"rolloverpeople\"><a class=\"rollover-people-link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/people\/tim-mcclintock\" data-nid=\"186564\">Tom McClintock<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(R-Calif.), the bill\u2019s lead sponsor, said Tuesday in remarks to reporters, calling the message to the Biden administration on Iran \u201ctruly urgent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis resolution expresses self-evident truths, not willful thinking\u201d about Iran\u2019s government, McClintock continued, adding that Iran\u2019s people have stressed their desire for a \u201csecular and representative form of democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers also accused Iran\u2019s government of supporting terrorism throughout the Middle East and attempting operations elsewhere as well, while raising the possibility of \u201ccountless\u201d Iranian agents active in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence and recent arrests suggest [the Iranian government] still has countless agents here in the U.S.,\u201d McClintock charged in his remarks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all familiar with Iran\u2019s support for terrorism.
