{"id":10309,"date":"2018-06-01T10:46:15","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T14:46:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/?p=10309"},"modified":"2018-06-01T10:46:15","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T14:46:15","slug":"international-transport-workers-federation-supports-truck-drivers-strike-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/10309\/","title":{"rendered":"International Transport Workers Federation Supports Truck Drivers&#8217; Strike in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itfglobal.org\/en\/news-events\/news\/2018\/may\/itf-statement-in-solidarity-with-truck-drivers-in-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">International Transport Workers\u2019 Federation<\/a>\u00a0(ITF), representing 20 million transport workers worldwide, stands in full solidarity with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irandemocratic.org\/public_html\/news\/10211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">truck drivers of Iran<\/a> as they enter a tenth day of strikes.<\/p>\n<p>Truckers in Iran are taking mass action over low wages and rising expenses, as well as for workers\u2019 rights and road safety.<\/p>\n<p>Their action has been strongly supported by the ITF\u2019s road transport affiliate the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran and Suburbs Bus Company, also known as the Vahed Syndicate.<\/p>\n<p>The strike first affected the Qazvin, Lorestan, East Azerbaijan and Mazandaran areas and has now been reported to have spread to all provinces and more than 250 cities.<\/p>\n<p>Road transport is vital to Iran\u2019s supply chains, so the action is having a significant impact. At the same time, there are reports that the truckers have received wide public support.<\/p>\n<p>The ITF head of inland transport, Noel Coard, said: \u201cTruckers\u2019 wages are not enough to cover their expenses. Together with the vast majority of ordinary Iranians, they have been suffering the impact of ongoing inflation and price hikes.<\/p>\n<p>They can\u2019t make a decent living.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, many trucks are in poor condition, needing spare parts and repairs. Alongside poor weather conditions, border area security problems and a general lack of road safety, Iranian truckers endure unacceptable working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorkers\u2019 rights, including the right of independent trade unions to represent their members, are key to resolving these issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Noel Coard added that the problem of low wages and safety in road transport supply chains has been prioritised by the ITF\u2019s road transport section.
